Obama Renews Sanctions Against Syria |

Al Waref Press Room President Obama sustains declaration of emergency with regard to Syria which renews sanctions delineated in previous executive orders. |
Washington – May 8, 2009 – On Thursday President Obama gave official notice to the U.S. Federal Registrar and Congress that continues for an additional year the declared emergency with respect to certain actions of the Government of Syria, extending the application of Executive Orders 13338 and 13399 which authorize trade sanctions against Syria.
According to Al Waref Institute poll data compiled prior to the renewal of sanctions, approximately 42 percent of responders have not supported the Obama administration's foreign policy towards Iran and Syria, the latter which has been characterized as engagement including overtures such as agreeing in February to provide Syria with parts for two civilian planes owned by Syrian Airlines and sending in March two senior officials as envoys to Damascus.
The Al Waref Institute has initiated a new poll to ascertain the level of support for this decision by the Obama administration among visitors of the Al Waref web site.
